Nightscapes
Il Furore
In 2001 shortly after I graduated college, I went with a photographer buddy of mine and spent months studying the camera, the elements of photography and the architectural magnificence of Italy. It was on this pilgrimage and at this exact spot that I realized I really wanted to focus on landscape photography. I wanted to capture the beauty of the earth as untouched by human hands as possible.
I was 21 and I had climbed this volcano in the middle of the Mediterranean late at night to witness the explosive power that was shaking the tiny island of Stromboli on which I was standing. Admittedly, I had a few liters of red wine in me at the time, but the incredible experience never left my side.
15 years later I took my pregnant wife to this spot to bear witness again to the awesome power of Mother Nature. This time I was much more ready, and with a killer camera and tripod setup, I fired away as the sun faded into the European darkness.
This photograph takes me back to my roots in photography and reminds me of the journey to get here, traveling half way around the world and hiking up an active volcano in order to capture the splendor of God's creation. This piece will always hold a special place in my heart!
