Winter
Heaven's Whisper
If you've never seen the Northern Lights with your own eyes, stop what you're doing. Book a flight to somewhere within the Arctic Circle like Reykjavic, Oslo or Fairbanks and hold on. If you are lucky enough to be treated to a light show it will most definitely change your life.
In 2014 I booked a flight during February to Iceland (sounds amazing doesn't it?). I knew this would be my best chance of witnessing the aurora borealis as they tend to peak in the winter and around the solstices from my research.
The first time I saw it I wasn't sure what I was seeing. It wasn't super clear and the energy was weak by aurora standards. A few nights later however I was driving looking for patches of clear sky when like a light switch, they just turned on. I had to pull over and watch the glory overhead.
I'm not even sure I was able to pull out my camera for the first few minutes as the dancing lights mesmerized me! Sometimes they last for only a few minutes, while other times they'll stay and play for hours.
On this particular night they were dancing like mad and I was positioned perfectly amid the base of Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland. This was definitely one of the many highlights of my trip and witnessing the Northern Lights was definitely a bucket list goal that finally got accomplished.
